The Neutral Bay Village community and small businesses support Council’s plans to turn the current Grosvenor Lane car park into a modern-day community plaza for the enjoyment of all.
The new plaza must keep the public car parking directly below it and separate to the supermarket parking. This will maintain the current Neutral Bay Village feel with direct and easy access to the plaza and local businesses.
Many retailers have been established for over 30 years including Blue & White Dry Cleaners, Priceline Pharmacy, Dymocks, Mr Gordons, Fine Fish, Merrigal Gifts, Olympus Sports, Cosmo's Florist and Bakers Delight, Chaos Cafe and Shoulder to Shank Organic Meat.
What you need to know:
1. The community wants to preserve Neutral Bay Village.
Save our small businesses within the Neutral Bay Village community from becoming isolated and stranded from public parking access.
-
In July 2019 the Council ran a Community Survey and the majority of respondents said they wanted to “preserve the Neutral Bay Village feel” and “Ease of access to a wide variety of shops and services” (Page 6, No 3.1).
-
You will no longer be able to park on the existing public car spaces and easily access the 50 Neutral Bay Village local shops.
-
If approved, this project will go to State Government and be between the Council, developer and State Government and will have almost no community input.
-
The quiet shared pedestrian + car laneway on Waters Lane will turn into a two-way intensive and loud supermarket truck loading dock.
-
Council’s direction is for a supermarket developer to build a new supermarket underground.

2. Public car parking land is being GIVEN TO A SUPERMARKET DEVELOPER
Council is giving away our entire public car park and village to a large supermarket
developer for the supermarkets commercial benefit resulting in loss of our
community land.
-
Council is not explaining in its new proposal the implications surrounding the loss of existing community car parking.
-
Public car parking will only be made accessible and convenient to the supermarket rather than the Village shops.
-
This is not consistent with the community feedback in September 2019 that they wanted to maintain a Village feel and ease of access.
3. There will be no easy and conveniently accessible parking in Neutral Bay Village!
The current car park is being removed and developed with no additional public
car spaces to allow for the proposed future Neutral Bay Village growth.
-
The proposed plan has no parking with direct access to Neutral Bay Village shops.
-
Neutral Bay car park will no longer exist, the supermarket will be allowed to expand into our community land.
-
To access your local Neutral Bay Village by car you will need to go underground beneath the supermarket and wait for a lift, destroying our village shopping experience.
-
The supermarket is going underground making it less accessible to pedestrians.

Alternative plaza solutions

The community deserves to know that there are other solutions that work for everyone, not just a supermarket developer. Alternative plaza solutions were presented to Council in September 2019 in response to their planning strategy.

These solutions:
-
Delivered a plaza that connected the community and the shops all whilst bathed in sunlight.
-
Created a vibrant community centric place to shop, live, work and dine.
-
Removed the current truck and pedestrian conflict by moving loading underground.
-
Provided separate access to public parking directly under the plaza.
-
Added significant new parking provided to the community.
-
Provided a plaza with multiple access points for pedestrians and public transport.
-
Maintains the Neutral Bay Village community feel.

“Bury the loading bay not Neutral Bay Village”.
